In der deutschsprachigen Forschungsliteratur wurde der finnischen Phonetik und Phonologie bisher wenig Beachtung geschenkt und kontrastive Analysen mit dem Deutschen sind erst seit den 1960er Jahren von wissenschaftlichem Interesse. (Hyvärinen 2001: 429) (...) Da Hirschfeld in ihrem Werk jedoch mehrere Sprachen abhandelt, befasst sie sich lediglich mit den wichtigsten Besonderheiten der jeweiligen Sprachen, so auch des Finnischen. Dieses Werk kann demnach nicht maßgebend sein, da der Vergleich mit der deutschen Sprache nicht umfassend behandelt wird.
Aus diesem Grund soll sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit einem Vergleich der deutschen und der finnischen Phonologie auseinandersetzen, wobei das Hauptaugenmerk auf die uns fremde Sprache, das Finnische, gerichtet werden soll. Des Weiteren sollen nur phonetische und phonologische Besonderheiten der beiden europäischen Sprachen berücksichtigt werden. Auf eine Einführung in die Begrifflichkeiten der kontrastiven Phonologie soll ebenso wenig eingegangen werden wie auf die einzelsprachlichen Phänomene im Bezug auf Lexik oder Grammatik der beiden Sprachen. Um einen Zugang zur Phonetik der Sprache zu finden, werden im zweiten Kapitel zunächst einige allgemeine Fakten zum Finnischen zusammengetragen, bevor im darauffolgenden Abschnitt das Vokalsystem des Finnischen untersucht wird. Anschließend soll auf das Konsonantensystem der finnischen Sprache eingegangen werden sowie abschließend auf die Probleme, die beim Finnisch-Lernen auftreten können.
